Student Volunteer Opportunities

There are several ways that you can get involved with the Admissions Office as early as freshman year. The two options that are available to students immediately after entering Holy Cross are Outreach and SABAR. Some of our more involved volunteer positions require students who have spent a bit more time on campus. Our Tour Guide and Senior Interviewer programs are selective programs which require a separate application and extensive training. If you are interested in one of these programs, please review the information below and contact the appropriate staff member for more information regarding the application process.

Outreach

As a member of the Outreach team, you are often the first student a prospective student meets on campus, and you will be involved in many facets of the student admission process. Responsibilities include joining the Greeting, Day Visit, and Social Media program, as well as hosting a student for Overnight Weekend in April. The overall commitment is 2-3 hours a week, with 1-2 day visits during each semester. Please review the brief descriptions and feel free to contact Dan Weagle if you have any further questions.

  • Ambassadors – Students will return to their high school and offer to meet with any current students who are interested in Holy Cross. Students are expected to make one visit per calendar year (generally over winter break, spring break, or summer break depending on students’ availability) to share their experience of what it’s been like to be a member of the Holy Cross community.
  • Day Visit Hosts - Hosts matched with a prospective student with whom they have at least one thing in common - academic interest, extracurricular interest, same hometown or high school, etc. Prospective students will arrive on campus in the morning, and depart sometime in the afternoon. During the day, with you as their guide, they’ll have the chance to eat in Kimball, attend classes, sit in on club meetings, etc. Volunteers are expected to host at least 3 day visits a semester.
  • Greeters – Students will interact with prospective students and their families as the first point of contact for visitors to the College. Greeters assist the Admissions Office by providing a friendly face and answering any questions that visitors may have prior to taking a tour, information session or admission interview. Students are expected to spend approximately 1-2 hours/week in our office speaking with visitors.
  • Overnight Hosts – Prospective students stay overnight in the dorm room with their overnight host and then go to class and eat in the dining hall. These visits are a great way for prospective students to experience academic and social life at the College.  In the fall semester, there is one overnight option for students who attend the Perspectives program. For the spring semester, we offer select nights in April for regular decision accepted students only. Volunteers are expected to host for the 1 overnight in the fall and about 1-3 nights in the spring.
  • Social Media Group – Students will help to answer questions and engage with prospective students through a variety of social media outlets including: Facebook, Twitter, College Confidential, and chat events. Students are expected to spend approximately 1-2 hours/week online for this group.

SABAR

  • SABAR (Student Advisory Board for ALANA Recruitment) - Students will assist with a number of events related directly to the recruitment of ALANA students. Programs may include student panels, overnight visits, online chats, etc. Student time committment will vary in accordance with different programs. We are looking for students who are committed to increasing the diversity on campus and who are willing to work on a variety of events to achieve the goal.

For more information on how to sign up for the SABAR group, please contact Juliana Jennings.

Tour Guides

  • Tour Guides - Students will give tours of campus to prospective students, parents and school groups throughout the academic year. Tour guides are often the first introduction a family has to the College. Their role in communicating the feel of what life is like for students on our campus is crucial to the impression that prospective students will form about Holy Cross. Interested students need to have been on campus for at least two semesters and will undergo an application process that includes a group interview with members of the Admissions staff. We seek academically successful students who are actively involved on campus and excited about sharing their love of the school with prospective students and their families. Students are required to give a weekly tour and are expected to volunteer during some weekends for Saturday tours and Admissions Open Houses.

 Senior Interviewers

  • Senior Interviewers – Each year we select a group of seniors who interview prospective students throughout the fall semester. This is a critically important role and provides an opportunity for current Holy Cross students to have hands-on experience in Admissions by helping to craft the incoming class. Interested seniors will need to submit a resume and cover letter. From those applications, we will select students to interview for the position. We are looking for students who have been highly successful at the College, both academically and in their involvement with the community. Students will be given a weekly schedule (including one Saturday morning) and are expected to volunteer 5 hours of their time per week. Current Holy Cross juniors may apply in March, and will be notified in early May.
